Resurrection…One Prompt at a Time
Months ago, as we began revamping our marketing content, we kept running into the same roadblock: some of our best past work only existed in photographs that failed to do it justice. We were dealing with old physical prints that had faded over time, or scans that lost critical detail in translation—degradation that made them completely unsuitable for modern screens. The question quickly shifted from why we couldn't use these images to how technology could help us revive them.
We were already using Gemini to create quick, preliminary renderings for client presentations, and that experience sparked an experiment: could we use those same tools to restore our archive? Rather than let strong projects sit in digital purgatory due to subpar photography, we decided to play Dr. Frankenstein and see if we could bring them back to life. After all, digital photographers have been enhancing images for years. Working specifically with Gemini, our goal was simple: recover true color, clarity, and detail without distorting the authentic character of the spaces.
That distinction matters deeply to us. Too often, 'AI-enhanced' photos turn into stylized fantasies where the computer distorts reality and invents details that were never there. That wasn’t our play. With careful, restraint-driven prompts, we focused entirely on pulling back the original color and sharpness time had washed out. The underlying architecture was real; the tool simply restored its original presence. The results blew past our expectations, breathing new life into these images and allowing us to showcase the true breadth of our portfolio.
From there, it was a short leap to ask how else these tools could elevate our active design process. On a recent church renovation, we took a rough architectural sketch of a new parking lot entrance, paired it with a photo of the existing structure, and generated a full render in about 45 seconds. That combination of speed and quality completely transforms how we collaborate with clients. What used to take days of drafting now takes seconds, giving clients immediate clarity on the vision. We even loaded the original photo and the new render into a video editor to create a smooth transition showing the building as it stands today alongside what it will become.
Fittingly, the philosophy guiding our technology is the exact same one guiding our architectural practice: we don't erase what exists simply because starting fresh is easier. We examine what’s already there, respect its history, and use it as a foundation for additions that complement and modernize the space. We aim for a natural blend between old and new, making sure the past is respected while the house is updated for how people live today. At the end of the day, our job is to give clients a space they love and give the building another half-century of viability.
