Introducing “The Elemental Home”

What’s Elemental about a Home?

All of our residential projects start with one important distinction: there is a difference between a house and a home. At its most basic, a house is a building type: square footage, a roof, four walls. It is a shelter.

A home is so much more — it’s where life happens for good times and bad. We believe that well-designed homes have the power to dramatically shape and support how that life is lived. Our approach looks at the symbiotic relationship between spaces and the people who inhabit them.

Elemental, because these spaces are the building blocks — the rooms interwoven into the fabric of our lives. Not just the finishes or fixtures, but the activity zones and spaces that connect us to the way we live — where the day starts, where people gather or seek solitude, where the boundary between inside and outside is felt deliberately and with care. They are intentional.

We’re excited to introduce The Elemental Home — a new series of stand-alone brochures celebrating the everyday spaces that shape how we live. Each booklet focuses on a specific elemental space, spotlighting examples of our work. Each space is the thoughtful design response to a client’s specific need or requirement. Think of each issue as a short conversation full of inspiration, design details, and practical ways to make it yours. One size does not fit all!

Three issues completed so far

So far, we’ve completed the first three issues: Porches (included here), Baths, and Kitchens. Porches leads the series because they are the entry point into the private world of their owner. They are multi-purpose social rooms, seasonal shelters, and the gentle bridge between public life and private comfort.

In the Porches brochure you’ll find several examples of how the Southern front and back porch has evolved over time. Ideas for gracious entry, expanded living space with fireplaces and AV, as well as examples of how a well-designed porch can transform a home’s character and its relationship to the street.

As the heart of the home, Kitchens follows next. They are where ritual and the craft of meal preparation meet. A well-designed kitchen is efficient, functional, and a center of family activity. The design anticipates the cooks needs by putting everything at hand. It allows for a lot of simultaneous activities where no one is in anyone else's way. It also looks good.

In Baths we showcase examples of bathrooms that are about easing your mornings. Carefully designed spaces tailored to your needs with material choices that stand up to daily use while feeling quietly luxurious. Storage of toiletry items is convenient and naturally located to support the rituals that begin or end your day.

What to expect from The Elemental Home

The Elemental Home is a collection of short, stand alone booklets you can digest in one sitting — concise but deep.

Each brochure looks at the overall design and the small, yet often forgotten decisions — tile, light, scale, layout, hardware and materials — that define success for these rooms.

A blend of perspective and evocative photography, with ideas you can adapt across budgets: from simple tweaks to larger remodeling projects. Homeowners who want clarity and inspiration for everyday spaces. Designers, builders, and makers looking for concise references and fresh thinking. Anyone who cares about how ordinary rooms shape everyday life into something a little less ordinary.
